Zimbabwe
Arts Festivals Network Launched
From 26-28 June,
Nhimbe hosted a Workshop for 30 festival managers in Harare. The
workshop was officially opened by the Director of the National Arts
Council Elvas Mari. In his address, Mari chronicled previous efforts
to set up a national festivals network; and applauded Nhimbe for
hosting a workshop that saw the birth of the Zimbabwe Festivals
Network (ZFN). In his address, Mari also explored governance of
Festivals in respect of regulations, standards, procedures and structures.
Other topics covered in the workshop included management, marketing,
resource mobilisation and sustainability, cultural statistics, international
artists mobility requirements in Zimbabwe, censorship and monitoring
and evaluation of arts festivals. Zimbabwe’s premier festival
HIFA gave an insightful, inspirational and challenging case study
covering the whole spectrum on the business of arts festivals.
The sessions
on censorship and artists’ mobility provided the critical
impetus in advocating for an enabling policy and regulatory environment
for the entire creative sector in Zimbabwe. The workshop concluded
with the adoption of a Constitutional framework, a set of priority
actions points for the next twelve months and the appointment of
a steering committee.
The Festival
Managers Workshop is the first of the three activities supported
by the International Fund for Cultural diversity. The other two
activities are a workshop for local authorities and another for
arts and cultural associations.
