Statement on International Women's Day
Women's Action Group (WAG)

March 06, 2011

Women's Action Group is a women's rights activist organisation whose work endeavours to improve the lives of women in Zimbabwe. Through the years gained over the past 26 years, WAG continues to identify and challenge societal norms, practices and values that hinder women from fully practising and enjoying their rights.

As a women's rights activist organisation, WAG has never looked back on championing the women's cause through advocacy for gender sensitive policies , sexual and reproductive health rights and access to equal opportunities for both men and women.

Some cultural practices that have been deemed negative have resulted in men gaining exclusive rights thus resulting in women losing the power to assert their rights. Women have lost the power to negotiate for safer sexual practices, hence they succumb to HIV infection and violence. WAG therefore calls for the woman of Zimbabwe to stand up and confront the gender dynamics in a cultural context to address the HIV and Gender Based Violence.

As the nation joins the International community in commemorating the International Women's Day, WAG challenges the woman of Zimbabwe to be assertive, self reliant and economically empowered to be able to stand up and demand her rights.

This call is also extended to the Government of Zimbabwe to:

  • Prioritise the girl child's education
  • Empower women and girls with life saving skills
  • Protect women's sexual and reproductive health rights

To all women, as WAG we say "lets take Action to Make it Happen!"
