Last Week at a Glance Issue 47
Women's Coalition of Zimbabwe
November 23, 2010

16 Days of Activism

The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence is an international campaign that originated from the first Women's Global Leadership Institute sponsored by the Center for Women's Global Leadership in 1991. It takes place in the period 25 November and 10 December to raise awareness around gender based violence. Women's Coalition of Zimbabwe joins the rest of the world in commemorating the 16 days of Activism under the local theme "Structures of Violence: Defining Safety and Security for Women and Girls". The important days to take note of are November 25, International Day Against Violence Against Women and December 10, International Human Rights Day, in order to symbolically link violence against women and human rights and to emphasize that such violence is a violation of human rights. This 16-day period also highlights other significant dates including November 29, International Women Human Rights Defenders Day, December 1, World AIDS Day, and December 6, which marks the Anniversary of the Montreal Massacre.

Activities for 16 Days of Actvism

WiPSU - is conducting celebration meetings with its Constituency Consultative Forum (Members of Parliament ) and Ward Consultative under this year's 'STRUCTURES OF VIOLENCE - DEFINING SAFETY AND SECURITY FOR WOMEN AND GIRLS' . This year's theme resonates very well with WiPSU's preparations for the proposed 2011 elections. WiPSU will convene Constituency Consultative Meetings with Members of Parliament in Makokoba, Bulawayo Central, Kuwadzana and Mufakose. The Ward Consultative Meetings will be convened in Masvingo Ward 12, Ward 9 and Matobo. These meetings are a platform to create awareness on the impact of violence on women candidates, women voters and their families and to ensure a non-violent atmosphere before and after elections so that women can actively participate in political processes and also acquire leadership positions.
