On Wednesday
14 July 2010 the Constitution Select Committee (COPAC) convened
a press conference and released a press statement on the Constitution
Outreach Programme and announced a break from the 11th of July to
the 18th of July to allow for the opening of Parliament and the
presentation of the mid-term fiscal statement. Outreach work resumes
on Monday 19 July 2010.
COPAC
Notes an improved participation of women in the consultations.
According to
statistics coming from the provinces there is an indication of marked
improvement of the participation of women in the consultations.
For example, Mashonaland East women constituted 40.8% and men constituted
37.1 of the total population, in Manicaland women constituted 44.4%
while men constituted 42.3 percent. The total figures for the whole
country as at 10 July 2010 shows that 42.2% (64 382) of those who
have participated are men while 40.9% (62 404) are women.
The
number of outreach meetings held so far.
A total of 1
000 meetings have been held so far nationally with the Midlands
Province in the lead with a total of 158 meetings. Manicaland Province
had the highest figure of participants, a total number of 28 273
people attended Outreach Meetings in the province and Matebeleland
North Province had the least number of meetings, only 73 meetings
were convened and attended by 6205 people. COPAC expressed concern
over the low figures in Matebeleland Province and has recommended
that measures be taken to improve the people's participation in
this important national exercise.
Launch
of Doors of Hope Development Trust
A new women's
organization; Doors of Hope Development Trust was launched on the
14th of July 2010 at a local hotel in Harare. The organization was
founded in 2009 by MDC-T women who were victims of politically motivated
rape and sexual abuse, it made up of 45 members from all over the
country and its objectives are to;
- Assist victims
of rape to develop their own potential to handle post traumatic
events of rape or sexual abuse.
- Lobby government
and other responsibilities authorities to avail and implement
policies that accommodate survivors of rape.
- Empower survivors
of rape psychologically, educationally, economically and socially.
- Promote healthy
living for victims through treatment, counseling and education
on relevant issues
Doors of Hope
Development Trust was founded by Mary Pamire and Rutendo Mutengami
and are seeking support in any form whether cash or kind in order
for the organization to grow. Research
and Advocacy Unit, Programmes Manager Kudakwashe Chitsike applauded
the founders for standing up as victims of a systems and as true
heroes who defied societal norms.
