WCoZ Chapters celebrate bleated International Women's Day Commemorations

Four WCoZ Chapters namely Bindura, Gwanda, Gweru and Kariba commemorated belated International Women's Day (IWD) in the week beginning 17th to 21 May 2010. The theme of the commemorations were, "Equal rights, Equal Opportunities progress for all", and focused on issues of freedom from violence and bodily integrity as constitutional rights. WCoZ secretariat had the opportunity to attend the Mashonaland Central commemorations which were held on the 21st of May 2010 at Manhenga Business Centre just 17km out of Bindura. More than 200 women marched from the business centre to the Roman Church where they were addressed by the Chapter Chairperson, Ms Joyce Chingwaru and the WCoZ Information Officer Ms Sandra Mazunga. Drama and music were part of the celebrations and the rural women from different age groups had the opportunity to express their concerns and enjoy their space without their male counterparts. A woman counselor from the area encouraged WCoZ to increase such gatherings for women as they benefited from awareness raising and a day of fun.

    ZWLA Chegutu Outreach visit

The Zimbabwe Women Lawyer's Association (ZWLA) held a meeting to sensitize women on constitutional issues at Chegutu Hall in Chegutu on the 20th of May 2010. This was part of a series of outreach meetings by Women's Coalition of Zimbabwe members to encourage women to take part in the Constitution making process. The meeting was attended by 75 women and focused on women's minimum demands in the new constitution. Among issues that women showed concern over was citizenship, particularly because Zimbabwe does not allow dual citizenship. A large number of women noted they are now considered aliens as they were forced to renounce their Zimbabwean citizenship although they were born and raised in Zimbabwe. Women also showed concern over birth registration as women are not considered legal guardians of their children. Organisations conducting outreach under this SIDA funded project include:
