    December 12, 2008

The Director of Zimbabwe Peace Project, Jestina Mukoko was this morning (December 3, 2008) abducted from her Norton home by 10 men in two vehicles without registration number plates.

Women's Coalition of Zimbabwe is outraged and shocked by this barbaric action. The men allegedly bundled her into a car and took her to an unidentified police station.

Our anger stems from increased reports of abductions and disappearances of many citizens among them women and girls. Some of these have been tortured, murdered and raped; with some yet to be accounted for.

These incidents have resulted in general insecurity of citizens and women in particular. This clearly demonstrates the cowardice by men of mobilizing ten men and two unidentifiable vehicles to kidnap/arrest an unarmed and non-threatening woman. Is ironic that Jestina is being violated at a period when we are commemorating the 16 days of Activism against gender based violence. On the 2nd of December, Jestina made a presentation on Women and Justice at a Women's Coalition event to commemorate the 16 Days.

As women we are vulnerable to torture and abuse and men find us easy targets.

We demand the immediate release of Jestina Mukoko and investigation and punishment of the perpetrators.

We also demand restoration of confidence in the law enforcement system by quickly addressing this matter and ensuring safety and security of the person.
