Women
can do it! - Election press statement
The
Women's Trust
April 09, 2008
During the August 20-21 2007, Women
Can Do It! Conference, with the theme "Setting Our Agenda
for Participation in Political Decision Making in Zimbabwe",
more than 450 participants who represented 150 organisations nationwide
declared that, as women of Zimbabwe:
- Communique
Article 8. We call for a thorough and determined effort by government
and civil
society to inform women of their right to participate as voters
in electoral processess;
- Communique
Article 10. We condemn violence in campaigning and demand to have
security as women
and citizens;
- Communique
Article 11. We call upon all the state organs of law and order
to provide us with the full
protection of the law;
- Communique
Article 12 We refuse the use of our sons and daughters as instruments
of violence by
politicians without integrity.
From August
20 2007 to March 29, 2008 ... we pursued this agenda we set out
for ourselves as women of Zimbabwe.
- We mobilised
each other and we participated in the electoral process at all
levels,
- We stood
as Candidates in huge numbers and contested 53% of parliamentary
seats even though we won only 14%,
- We now make
up 33% of the senatorial seats
- We participated
as voters on the 29th of March 2008
As 52% of the
population, it is our right as female citizens to share our concerns
regarding the failure to announce the results of the 2008 Presidential
Poll. As women, we have the responsibility to plan for our children
and families and the lack of information is making us live in limbo.
We voted and
we have the right to be informed of the results of our vote at the
earliest possible time. We call upon the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission
to anounce the results of the 2008 Presidential Poll. It has been
more than a week now and women of Zimbabwe are saying...
Tichakateya
nzeve ...Lokh' sithiye indlebe.
