LAW enforcement
agents, the medical fraternity and members of the judiciary will
soon undergo training on how to handle cases of domestic violence.
The acting Minister
of Women's Affairs, Gender and Community Development, Cde
Sithembiso Nyoni, told a recent gathering to mark the launch of
16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence in Harare last
week.
The 16 Days
of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence are running from November
25 to December 10.
There are reports
that at least 60 percent of all murder cases in Zimbabwe happen
among people who know each other or in family set-ups. The bulk
of the 6 000 rape cases of under age girls also took place in family
environments.
Justice, Legal
and Parliamentary Affairs secretary Mr David Mangota said that men
should never regard women as property.
He said victims
of domestic violence should receive encouragement and confidence
to report cases of abuse.
Chairperson
of the Zimbabwe
Women Lawyers' Association Mrs Emelia Muchawa said the
Domestic
Violence Bill once passed into law would safe guard current
and past spouses from violence and protects all children whether
born in or outside wedlock.
