101 Harare members to face trial
Women of Zimbabwe Arise (WOZA)
October 05, 2006

101 members of Women of Zimbabwe Arise (WOZA) are to face trial later this month charged under Chapter 37 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act - 'participating in a public gathering with the intent to cause public disorder, breach of peace or bigotry'. The women appeared in remand court in Harare this morning where the Magistrate, Mrs Mariga, set the trial date for 23rd October at Rotten Row Magistrate's Court.

If convicted, the women could receive up to five years in custody or a heavy fine. The women had been arrested on 11th September at Town House in Harare whilst protesting against poor service delivery in the capital.

Meanwhile in Bulawayo, 154 more WOZA members are facing the same charges for their participation in a demonstration against Operation Sunrise (the slashing of zeroes) in August and will appear in remand court on 10th October.
