womens' trial fails to take off
Women
of Zimbabwe Arise (WOZA)

The
trial of nine Women Of Zimbabwe Arise members (WOZA) failed to take
off today after it emerged that the police had not submitted to
court the return service (of summons). The women had been arrested
on 19 June 2004 during a peaceful demonstration and were to be charged
under the Miscellaneous Offences Act. It appeared that most of the
accused had not been summoned to appear in court.
The prosecutor,
Ms Muzondo, discharged the accused and indicated that if the police
wished to proceed they would have to reissue summons and was insistent
that the matter could not proceed.
WOZA will attend
two more remand hearings in Harare and Bulawayo on 5 and 10 October
respectively.
