Tuesday evening news update from WOZA
Women of Zimbabwe Arise (WOZA)
June 20, 2006

WOZA's campaign continued today in Harare where hundreds of WOZA members marched to the offices of the Ministry of Local Government and Housing. Riot police attended as members were dispersing and eight women were arrested. Five of these women were innocent bystanders who were caught in the cross-fire.

Lawyers from Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights were in attendance and managed to obtain their release. They were unable to obtain the release of the three remaining WOZA members however and police were using usual delaying tactics to frustrate the lawyers.

The women left in custody also continued to receive threats and intimidation from police officers. Afraid that threats of beatings would be carried out, they opted to pay admission of guilt fines and were released late the afternoon.
