arrests in Bulawayo
Women
of Zimbabwe Arise (WOZA)
February 14, 2006
Feb.14: The
total number of WOZA women and men and student sympathizers arrested is
181, plus 14 babies. Some of the students turned themselves in in solidarity
and have been released. Those detained are confined in standing room only
in the cage outside the cells in Bulawayo Central police station. They
are thus in the open air, as the cells are flooded. Mothers and babies
are inside in a different room. Four (Jenni Williams, Magodonga Mahlangu,
Emily Mpofu and Maria Moyo) have been finger-printed and ordered to make
statements, charged under section 24, Public Order and Security Act (organizing
an unlawful gathering). The lawyers have been prevented from seeing them,
and were told they can see them tomorrow.
Feb.13: WOZA
women in Bulawayo decided to celebrate Valentine’s Day early, and several
hundred marched through the centre of the city to the government offices
at Mhlahlandlela Building. They distributed red roses and leaflets in
a "Bread and Roses" demonstration, in which they were joined
by students. As they were dispersing, the riot police arrived and arrested
a large number. Seven defender land rover loads plus one large truck full
were transported to Bulawayo Central Police Station. Estimated numbers
of those arrested are more than 120 including at least two men. Among
those arrested are Jenni Williams and Magodonga Mahlangu and a 14 month
old baby. At the present moment Jenni has been separated from the others,
who are standing in the police station courtyard in a torrential downpour.
