INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY 8 MARCH 2005 IS HERE!
The women of WOZA have a message for Zimbabweans.

Omana bazakhetha ukukhulula odadewaba ekuhluphekeni!
Madzimai vachavhota kusunungura madzimai vari kutambudzika!

Who's fooling who?
In March Zimbabweans must LOOK, LISTEN and DECIDE, then they must go and vote wisely on the 31st. On 1 April, don't act like a FOOL. April is a month for ACTION. Sisters, is your vote for sale? Don't sell it; give it freely to your chosen one. Just as a mother defends her family, she must defend her vote! To the Politicians, we say FREE US DON'T FOOL US!

In the words of WOZA women….

  • Mrs Phiri (33) Myself, being a Zimbabwean woman, really I say we are living and surviving under miserable and harsh conditions. Our rights are being looked down at. We are not allowed to say out our grievances freely. Each time we try to say out anything we always end up in cells. Women are being raped, we have no access to freedom of speech, our government's love of power always overweigh the power of love. Some of us are widows, we can't afford to pay the ever-hiking school fees for our children. Even at such circumstances like that we are not allowed to say anything about that, if any woman opens her mouth and say a word she will end up in custody. Surely, I encourage my sisters to go and vote at where there is 'love' otherwise we will be able to free ourselves and some of our sisters from suffering.

Okokugqoka angikhulumi ngakho ngoba ungathi silunywe yizinja ngendlela esidatshukelwe ngayo labantwabami. Imali angikhulumi ngayo ngoba yangifela ngo 1980. O Maye Somandla yinsimu bani esiyilime iminyaka engu 25 singelasiphala? Ngubani ozangesula inyembezi? YIVOTI YAMI! NgizaVota ukuze ngikhulule abanye odadewethu ekuhluphekeni.

  • NgingunakaPhikelela ngileminyaka engu30 ngihlala koBulawayo. Ngilabantwana abathathu. Ubaba wabo uyisiphepheli kwelinye ilizwe elingumakhelwane. Abantwabami abamazi badinga uthando lwakhe kodwa bayaluswela. Angibona ngithakazelela ilanga labomama, kodwa ngithi koze kube nini abantwant bengamazi uyise? Woza Moya oyingcwele unikhulule ekuhluphekeni.
  • I am a widow aged 37, I have 2 children. I want democracy in my country but don't have it. I survive by selling vegetables. I am often arrested by policemen who confiscate my goods. Sometimes I borrow money to buy and if I am arrested I end up in bigger problems. The policemen sometimes take my goods to their homes and I am sure they eat the food with their children whilst I will be killing mine with hunger! So where are our RIGHTS, we women of Zimbabwe? I am sick and tired of policemen arresting me for trying to survive with my family!

According to a United Nations Survey, Women do 90% of the work but only earn 10% of the income and own 1% of the wealth of nations. In Zimbabwe, we are 52% of the population. Look through the queues of voters on 31st March and you will see mostly women. But how many of us have JOBS; How many can afford to put food on the table or send their children to school? How much of the income do we EARN and what do we OWN? WOZA represents Zimbabwean women who are fighting an EVEolution - they want to fully exercise their rights and freedoms.

Mugabe promised to protect womens rights! is he doing that?
Together with other African leaders, Robert Mugabe signed the "PROTOCOL TO THE AFRICAN CHARTER ON HUMAN AND PEOPLES' RIGHTS ON THE RIGHTS OF WOMEN IN AFRICA" on 16 November 2001, to make sure that ALL rights of ALL women are protected.

By signing this Protocol, Robert Mugabe promised to [among other things]:

  • End discrimination against Women
  • Respect Women's dignity
  • Protect Women's right to life and security

Mugabe pledged that to do this he would:

  • Prevent and prohibit violence against women in public and private spheres
  • Promote peace education to break the culture of violence against women
  • Punish perpetrators of violence against women
  • Focus on the rehabilitation of women victims of violence.

Have these things happened? We must hold our leaders accountable to their promises!!

For women to be fully dignified they must have equality, freedom, peace, justice, solidarity and democracy. They must not be exploited or degraded.
