New Arrivals - Primates & Lion Cubs
Chipangali Wildlife Trust
April 28, 2005

Primates
Over the last couple of months we have had an influx of vervet monkey's, all of whom are distinctly different in character, appearance and each have a special place in our hearts.

Recently a lady from Harare was constantly asking for our advise on how best to rear a young vervet monkey. Their daughter Caroline had fallen head over heels in love with young Marcel. Marcel was rescued after his mother had been killed whilst on one of their crop raiding excursions. As little Marcel continued to grow - as all little monkey's he started to become quite a handful.

Reluctantly, the family decided that it was in Marcel's best interests to be raised with other vervet monkeys. After much deliberation, young Caroline and her friend whom was also raising an orphaned vervet monkey came down to Chipangali to hand over their bundles of joy. Although it was a emotionally trying period for both the primates and their foster parents, we are pleased to report that both Tsoko and Marcel have settled in well.

Then along came little tiny tot , Miagi. Miagi is a gorgeous chap, & always seems to look at little gormless. So life just passes him by at a slow steady pace.

Yet another member, Mojo, came to join the young troop all the way from the Lowveld. Mojo, tends to be a little shy in character until feeding time, he joins Sammy, Jack, Mr.T, Miagi, Marcel and Tsoko, scampering around, and often playing vigorously with one another.

Lion Cubs
A follow up to our Newsletter - Unfortunately, Kayla did not continue looking after her cubs. As a result, it was decided in the best interests of the little ones that we remove 3 of the of the 4 little cubs . Leaving her with the job to rear one, we suspect that she lacks in milk production thereby us removing 3, gave her a better chance at least to rearing her first cub. Even after giving her chance, she was still unable to successfully her sole cub and unfortunately it died.

Of the 3 cubs that we removed, two were going to the Orphanage nursery to be hand-reared and one went to our Town Office for Viv and Paddy to hand-rear. The nursery cubs were named Kofu & Kiara. Kofu was not blessed with good looks, bless him, who is constantly being bullied by his little sister Kiara. They love chewing slops, and playing in the garden flower beds, pouncing on the plants and one another.
