GALZ
calls for the immediate release of Beatrice Mtetwa
Gays and Lesbians of Zimbabwe (GALZ)
March 18, 2013
GALZ condemns
the unwarranted arrest
of Beatrice Mtetwa a prominent human rights lawyer in Zimbabwe.
We are concerned about her continued detention facing charges of
obstructing justice despite a court order for her release being
granted.
The harassment
of Beatrice is an attack on Zimbabwean women in general and a clear
demonstration of the lack of respect for the role of lawyers in
the structure of democratic society. It highlights the very difficult
circumstances in which defenders of human rights defenders find
themselves in discharging their duties.
We call on the
government to ensure that lawyers are able to perform all of their
professional functions without intimidation, hindrance, harassment
or improper interference. We also call for her immediate release
and that Government should ensure that lawyers are properly protected
in compliance with its constitutional, regional and international
law obligations.
