Statement
on GALZ arrest
Sexual Rights Centre
August 23, 2012
The Sexual Rights
Centre issues a message of support and solidarity to GALZ
members and its staff during this difficult time.
The raid and
arrest of 44 GALZ members
by state police over the weekend is a clear indication of the appalling
human rights violations that continue to take place in Zimbabwe
and the SRC is challenging these arrests as unlawful, arbitrary
and a serious violation of human rights of GALZ members.
The SRC also
condemns the detention and interrogation of the arrested GALZ members.
The police seek to continue hindering and limiting citizens' rights
and freedoms, in this case the rights to freedom of peaceful assembly
and association, which are clearly granted and fully recognized
by the current constitution
of Zimbabwe as well as in other international treaties that Zimbabwe
has signed.
The SRC therefore
call upon the police to halt the arbitrary arrest, detention, harassment
and intimidation of lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender people
in Zimbabwe.
