  • Police arrest forty-four GALZ members
Gays and Lesbians of Zimbabwe (GALZ)
    August 12, 2012

Forty four GALZ members were arrested yesterday at the GALZ office soon after the launch of the GALZ Violations Report and briefing on the second draft Zimbabwe Constitution. They have now been released.

Police started releasing all members around 6:30 am this morning in small groups of between three and five at a time.

Four police officers attempted to gain entry into the premises before calling for back up where about fifteen riot squad members descended on the office and effected arrest. Police assaulted most of the members using baton sticks, open hands and clenched fists before detaining them without charge.

One of the members collapsed early hours of the morning as a result of the savage assault. We are currently providing support to all members to assess their condition after the assault. We are also working to repair the electrical fence which was damaged during the melee. We appreciate any support that can be granted at this point in time.

We will continuously update you should there be any developments.

Thank you to all our friends, colleagues and partners that have provided support so far.
