Fadzai
Muparutsa leaving GALZ
Gays and Lesbians of Zimbabwe (GALZ)
February 23, 2012
On the 29th
of February 2012, GALZ says goodbye to Fadzai Muparutsa after a
decade of service.
In August 2003
Fadzai was appointed to the newly created position of Programme
Manager for Gender at a time when women represented less than two
percent of GALZ's total membership. Since then, Fadzai dedicated
her energies to mobilizing lesbian, bisexual and trans women in
Zimbabwe as well as confronting the negative attitudes of some men
towards women within GALZ.
Women now represent
over one third of GALZ's membership and they are visible at
all levels within the organisation including positions of leadership.
She was GALZ's
main representative within the Women's
Coalition of Zimbabwe and the Coalition of African Lesbians
(CAL). She has also joined a number of delegations attending the
United Nations, AWID and ILGA and was a key figure in GALZ advocacy
efforts.
Fadzai was instrumental
in organising a Sexual Orientation Indaba in 2010 for human rights
organisations that at the end of the meeting agreed that it was
important for the human rights organisations to speak on the need
to have sexual orientation included in the new constitution resulting
in GALZ putting forward a submission to COPAC.
We value her
dedication towards emancipation of LBT women in particular and we
will commit to continuing from where she has left off, together
with the team that she has worked with in the Gender Department
with the hope of fulfilling her dream. We wish her well and will
be missed in GALZ.
