Tinzwei
(Hear our Voice) photo-voice project 2011
GALZ & Katswe Sistahood
November 30, 2011
Background
to the project
A first project
of its kind, Tinzwei (Hear our voices) is a photo voice initiative
carried out by a diverse group of Harare women (ages 19-43) sharing
experiences of their struggles, successes and Breaking the Silence
experienced due to women's sexuality and gender.
The process
was a journey of recognition and affirmation. for the participants
as most of them were eager to document their lives in communities
were they grew up in. While using photography was a creative means
of speaking out and a form of collective expression, it was also
a skills building exercise. Through photography and the written
word, going back to the past was a painful experience for some as
they re-lived the past in a five-day whirlwind.
The photographs
taken during the process will be used to launch a 2-day exhibition
hosted by GALZ
and Katswe Sisterhood
at the Alliance Francaise on 1-2ndst December 2011. The future plan
is to taken this exhibition to the communities in which these women
documented their lived realities.
There is no
doubt if any that this project serves as an alternative platform
to amplify the voices of women as we commemorate 16 days of activism
and World AIDS Day where women tell their own in stories their own
way.
