GALZ
statement on International Day Against Homophobia
Gays and Lesbians of Zimbabwe (GALZ)
May 18, 2011
17
May each year marks International Day Against Homophobia (IDAHO),
As GALZ, we celebrate this day to reflect on the daily struggles
of lesbian gay bisexual transgender and Intersex people and their
families in an environment where homophobia is almost institutionalised.
Zimbabwe's
rich and diverse culture implores every citizen to be aware that
we are all different and all unique. It is our differences that
complete our humanity yet individuals in positions of authority
often seek to justify the violations of the right to equality precisely
on the ground that the individuals discriminated against "are
different".
Criminal prohibitions
on sex between consenting men, impacts negatively and severely on
the lives of LGBTI people in a plethora of ways of which those accustomed
to heterosexual privilege remain completely unaware. We again call
for the decriminalisation of same sex conduct and an enaction of
laws that will guarantee positive participation of LGBTI people
in society without fear
We call upon
Zimbabweans to shun and condemn all forms of violence and discrimination
relating to sexual orientation, gender identity and expression.
Let us root out the homophobia and transphobia that wants to eradicate
the uniqueness in us by promoting peace, love diversity and respect
of all its citizens.
Let us call
for an end to harassment and arbitrary arrests of persons known
or suspected to be gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender or intersex
and strive to create a society where we exist perpetually and universally
regardless of historical, cultural, ideological, economic, or any
other difference.
