A
show of force
Gays and Lesbians of Zimbabwe (GALZ)
April 13, 2011
GALZ
joins civil society and human rights organisations in calling for
an end to the use of excessive force by the police who assaulted,
used teargas, and arrested
congregants at a prayer meeting in Glen Norah on Saturday 9 April.
Such use of
force is in direct contradiction to the Global
Political Agreement. Denying Zimbabweans the right to participate
in processes that compliment National Healing is an infringement
of the right to freedom of assembly and association as well as the
right to worship.
GALZ calls for
the the release of Shakespeare Mukoyi, one of the congregants who
were arrested on Saturday at the prayer meeting and is still detained
by the police without treatment. We demand that his right to health
be respected.
We also call
on the Ministry of Home Affairs to investigate the conduct of police
whose unwarranted actions created pandemonium and confusion during
the Pray for Zimbabwe church service.
