SRC
expands HIV/AIDS prevention efforts
Children and youth lack unfettered access to HIV information, sexual
and life-kills Education. In an effort to expand the reach of effective
prevention efforts to young people who are at high risk of contracting
STIs including HIV, the Sexual Rights Centre (SRC) embarked on an
information campaign on December 1-3, 2008. The campaign targeted
young people living in Makokoba and Emganwini high density suburbs
in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe.
SRC screened a 90-minute film, Yesterday, a touching story about
one woman's experience of living with HIV/AIDS in South Africa.
More than 250
young people viewed the film and some requested that the SRC should
continue screening educational films on a regular basis.
Film was used
because of its power to 'cultivate' people's conceptions of social
reality. Young people were targeted because of the need to groom
future leaders who actively participate in the global fight against
HIV/AIDS.
This year's World AIDS Day theme is "Lead, Empower, Deliver."
The SRC believes that young people are the future leaders and by
involving them at an early age we encourage them to continue to
promote the campaign slogan, "Stop AIDS. Keep the Promise."
