Brutal
attack of lesbians in Zimbabwe
Gays and Lesbians of Zimbabwe (GALZ)
November 08, 2006
It is with a heavy heart that I inform
of the brutal attack on 7 lesbian members of the Gays and Lesbians
of Zimbabwe on Friday 3 November.
The 7 women were physically assaulted
by 4 men on the afternoon of the 6th. The men were touching and
fondling the 'femme' women while taunting their partners to react
if they were men and were able to stand up for their women. A fight
ensued and all the women were brutally assaulted. They managed to
get away, although they all sustained injuries.
One of the women, Susan, was later
during that same day sexually assaulted by the same men. Although
they did not have sexual intercourse with her, they inserted a knife
and other objects into her vagina.
A police report was made and one of
the assailants has been caught and is in police custody.
All the women who were assaulted live
in one house and in the same area as the men who attacked them.
We need to move them out of this environment as they are in life
threatening danger. I would like to ask all of you if you can please
assist us with any support that you have to relocate the women and
ensure that they are safe.
The assailant in cusody will be appearing
in court on Thursday 9 November. At this point, we are trying to
get legal representation from the Human
Rights NGO Forum and the women are undergoing counselling sessions
with one of our referal counsellors.
