GALZ
statement on the apology made by ANC Vice President, Mr Jacob Zuma
Gays and Lesbians of Zimbabwe (GALZ)
September 29, 2006
The Gays and Lesbians of Zimbabwe (GALZ)
welcomes the apology to the lesbian and gay community by Mr Jacob
Zuma and appreciates his ability to show remorse for the pain and
suffering his remarks have caused, not only for lesbian and gay
people in South Africa but for those in neighbouring countries and
elsewhere on this continent.
Nevertheless, his remarks relating
to the upbringing of boys and girls in traditional settings do not
constitute a defence for what he said and indicate that his apology
is in no way unreserved.
Let us hope that Mr Zuma has learnt
an important lesson from this unfortunate episode and that his enlightenment,
if genuine, will help him realise the importance we attach to the
support of political leaders in the struggle for the inclusion of
gay and lesbian people in the human family.
