CeSHHAR Zimbabwe

CeSHHAR Zimbabwe is an organization that specializes in sexual health, HIV and AIDS research in Zimbabwe. The organization is implementing a National Sex Work Programme aimed at reducing HIV acquisition among sex workers thereby reducing HIV transmission to their clients. We received funding to conduct a research that seeks to enhance HIV treatment and prevention among sex workers (SW) attending our mobile clinics in Zimbabwe. We are therefore looking for the following positions to start working on the research component immediately.

1) 1 x Assistant Social Scientist ( 1 year contract renewable)

Purpose of the Job : The post holder will be responsible for all data collection activities within the research

Key duties and responsibilities: Reporting to the Social Scientist the following will be the Assistant Social Scientist core duties

  • Conduct the Informed Consent process of participants according to the GCP and Ethics guidelines
  • Conduct in-depth interviews and focus group discussions according to GCP guidelines
  • Transcribing and translations of all data collected from focus group discussions and Indepth interviews
  • Data entry, coding and analysis using NVivo 8 (QSR International Ltd, Melbourne, Australia).and Stata 10 (Stata Corporation, Texas, USA
  • Any other duties as designated by the Social Scientist

Qualifications, Skills and Abilities

  • Degree in Social Sciences, an advanced degree is an added advantage
  • Certificate in GCP and Ethics, sound knowledge of the Zimbabwean regulations and ethical standards
  • Experience in conducting interviews in a research setting
  • Experience working with vulnerable populations
  • Ability to work with people from various socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Bilingual will be an added advantage
  • Good interpersonal and organizational skills
  • High level of professionalism and customer service orientated, non judgmental and ability to pay attention to detail

2) 4 x Nurse counselors

The nurse counselors will be responsible for recruiting, enrolling and interviewing all participants to the baseline survey according to GCP guidelines. Reporting to the Programme Coordinator, the Nurse Counselor’s duties will include:

  • Recruiting and consenting clients according to GCP guidelines
  • Enroling clients
  • Conducing a quantitative interview with each enrolled client
  • Collecting a finger prick blood sample for dired blood spot sample collection
  • Maintaining proper documentation on all programme forms
  • Any other duties as needed by the Programme.

Qualifications and experience

  • Degree/Diploma in nursing
  • Experienced clinician
  • Experience and knowledge of STI treatment and management
  • Counseling diploma and experience in HIV/AIDS counseling
  • Certified by HPC to perform rapid HIV testing and DBS testing
  • Current GCP and Ethics training certificate an advantage
  • Experience working with vulnerable populations (sex workers) an added advantage
  • Fluency in English, Shona (and Ndebele for Hwange and Gwanda positions)

3) 1 x Outreach worker

The post holder will be responsible for ensuring good communication with programme communities, and assisting with recruitment of sex workers to the research programme. This will involve working closely with the communities, district and provincial officials to introduce the research programme and keeping them well informed about the progress of the research.

Reporting to the Research Coordinator, the Outreach Worker’s duties will include:

  • Working with the sex worker peer educators to identify and recruit sex workers for inclusion in the baseline research according to GCP and Ethics guidleines.
  • Working with sex worker peer educators to identify all the various communities working in a given geographic location.
  • Assist in mobilization of sex workers to come for the survey
  • Dissemination of programme related information.
  • Participate and represent the programme in related Provincial and Districts HIV forums

Qualifications and experience

  • A professional Diploma in a relevant field, preferably teaching, social sciences or nursing
  • Counseling diploma and experience in HIV/AIDS counseling and added advantage
  • Demonstrable experience and interest in community outreach work, ability to do community mobilization, create rapport with personnel from collaborating or associate institutions and work independently but within a team framework.
  • Current and valid certificate in GCP and Ethics an advantage
  • Training experience an advantage
  • Experience working with vulnerable populations (sex workers) an added advantage
  • Fluency in English, Shona (and Ndebele for Hwange and Gwanda positions

4) 4 x Drivers

Responsibilities of the drivers

The successful candidates will have previous experience working as a driver for a project that required rural driving experience. Drivers should ensure that their vehicles are in proper working condition and should report any faults to the office administrator or project coordinator when in the field. Drivers will be responsible for the safe passage/travel of the project team.

Duties: Reporting to the project coordinator the following will be the driver’s core duties

  • Driving the project vehicle for the project team on a full time basis. This will include travelling from Harare to the field on a regular basis.
  • Transporting programme specimens to and from the clinic sites to the lab
  • Driving the project team around the communities during programme preparation.
  • Taking note of any faults that may develop on the vehicle and bringing them to the attention of the office administrator and project coordinator as soon as possible.
  • Ensuring that the vehicle has the necessary accessory tools as should be equipped, e.g. jack, wheel spanner and spare wheel.
  • Maintaining the project vehicles including oil and water checks, tyre checks, service checks, and any other duties that may be assigned by the office administrator from time to time to ensure a smooth project flow.


A clean class four driver’s license; a mature person, who is well organized; ability to work independently but within a team framework; fluent in English , Shona and Ndebele. Experience working in a reproductive research environment and working with vulnerable populations (sex workers) is an added advantage.
