Overview
The Institute
of Peace, Leadership and Governance (IPLG) at Africa University,
in partnership with the Open Society Initiative of Southern Africa
(OSISA) invites applications to the fourth annual Young Women's
Leadership (Feminism) Training Course. The 10-day course will be
held from 20 - 30 August in Mutare, Zimbabwe
The course aims to strengthen
the capacity of young women in Southern Africa to challenge patriarchy,
promote gender equality and enable them to play a more active role
in the feminist movement. Participants are introduced to key theories
and frameworks of feminism and critically engage in examining their
relevance and applicability to their personal and professional lives.
By the end of course, participants will be equipped with skills
to analyze issues in women's lives and strategically work
to address them. Modules covered in the course include the following:
feminist theory and conceptual frameworks, body politics (sex and
sexuality), feminist research, knowledge management, leadership
and movement building which will be facilitated by feminist scholars
and activists. This is a good forum for young women to network with
peers from across the Southern African region and it also offers
a safe environment for sharing of and reflecting on life experiences.
Eligibility
Criteria
Applicants who meet the following criteria will be considered:
1. Must be a
young woman of between 18 and 30 years of age
2. Be a citizen of one of the following SADC countries: Angola,
Botswana, DRC, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Swaziland,
Zambia and Zimbabwe
3. Must have attained or is studying towards a qualification from
a recognized tertiary institution
4. Have at least 1 year work experience working in an organization
or program related to gender equality or women's rights
5. Currently employed, or working in an area where feminist or gender
policy advocacy and lobbying is important
6. Some English proficiency (the course will be delivered in English
with French and Portuguese translation services provided)
7. Commitment to participate for the duration of the full course
Young women in special
circumstances, e.g. young women with disabilities and young women
living with HIV/AIDS, are encouraged to apply. Regretfully, the
course does not accommodate male participants and participants from
other countries at this time.
