Shortages of water in Harare and other areas across the country
Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace in Zimbabwe (CCJP)
November 18, 2011

The Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace in Zimbabwe (CCJPZ) joins all water consumers across the country in demanding the availability of adequate and safe drinking water for both domestic and commercial purposes.

The Commission recommends that affected cities, towns and councils urgently attend to this national crisis to mitigate further human suffering. Access to clean water is a basic human right and there is no substitute. The central government is therefore requested to declare the country wide water shortage a national disaster and marshal resources to arrest the chronic water shortages within the shortest time possible. The advent of the rainy season will aggravate the situation as safe water are likely to be contaminated, further endangering many lives, particularly of the less privileged in society.

The Commission applauds all concerned residents, companies and other benevolent people and agencies that have provided water to those people in need. These actions of solidarity and concern for the poor and marginalized go a long way in making our country a better place to live. May the rich blessing of our Lord be with you all.
