DIEPSLOOT – The
Zimbabwe Pastors Forum (ZPF) last weekend donated food and clothing
to about 200 Zimbabwean refugees and asylum seekers who are living
in South Africa.
The ZPF, which
was set up earlier this year to look after the interests of refugees,
handed over 10 bags of blankets, dozens pairs of shoes, clothes
as well as packets of food to the refugees who are staying in Diepsloot
in Johannesburg.
Apart from Zimbabweans,
the settlement also houses refugees from the Democratic Republic
of Congo, Angola, Burundi as well as some from Rwanda.
Speaking at the
hand-over ceremony at the weekend, Pastor Guvakuva said it was their
duty as the church to look after the material needs of the poor.
"It is not
enough to just preach to the hungry but we have an obligation to
feed them when they are hungry and thirsty. We care for the poor
and those in difficult situations like the ones we are assisting
today," he said.
There are thousands
of Zimbabwean refugees living in South Africa after fleeing hunger
and political persecution in their country. Because of its proximity,
South Africa is the destination of choice for most Zimbabweans fleeing
economic collapse at home. - ZimOnline
