IOM
launches safe journey roadshow
International
Organisation for Migration (IOM)-Zimbabwe
March 16, 2006
ZIMBABWE
- Continuing IOM’s SAFE JOURNEY multi-media Information Campaign,
aimed at reducing risks for potential migrants and informing citizens
on HIV prevention and the dangers of irregular migration, IOM
now launches their travelling roadshow.
Zimbabweans
across the nation are no doubt aware of IOM’s SAFE JOURNEY campaign,
whereby radio, print, billboards and bumper stickers are being used
to convey safe migration messages.
The campaign
is nationwide, aimed at all potential migrants. Now, in line the
concept of taking the message from the capital to the borders via
the main transit routes, the roadshow will do just that. It starts
in Harare and for two months visits Bulawayo, the border towns and
major growth points along the way, disseminating the information
at a grass roots level. Using drama, dance, music, 3 x 30-minute
films, interactive discussions with the audience and games for prizes
such as t-shirts, music cassettes and colour posters, the SAFE JOURNEY
ROADSHOW reinforces the messages that in foreign countries, undocumented
migrants may face little or no access to health care, a lack of
legal rights, and the risk of HIV infection. Irregular migration
puts people – often women and children – at greater risk. Low or
no pay, sexual abuse and human trafficking are just some of the
risks IOM wants to combat.
This campaign
will give people the information they need to make an informed decision
and to ensure their actions improve their life, not endanger it.
To date, the campaign has used:
- A hot CD,
featuring Zimbabwe’s most popular artists including Oliver Mutukudzi,
Pastor G, Plaxedes, Dudu and Afrika Revenge.
- Radio – through
both a series of migrants’ testimonies, aimed at youth, women,
and men PLUS interviews with the artistes on FAMBA ZVAKANAKA,
using audience participation to discuss the issues of migration,
human trafficking and HIV
- colourful
posters printed in Shona, Ndebele, and English
- Billboards
across the country
- Brochures
and A ‘passport to Safe Migration’ – a booklet with complete information
for people on legal and irregular migration
- Bumper stickers
– aimed at taking the message to the transit routes of Zimbabwe
and the region
- A website
– www.SafeMigrationZimbabwe.com
aimed at students and young professionals
The SAFE JOURNEY
ROADSHOW has recruited some of Zimbabwean best known actors: Thembekile
Moyo, Braveman Makaza, Themba Moyo, Killen Musaendaeko and John
Gashoto. In a thoroughly entertaining and interactive format, the
team deliver their serious messages. Having completed a series of
dress rehearsals in some of Harare’s high density areas, the SAFE
JOURNEY ROADSHOW will perform two more in Harare: tonight, March
16 at Ruwa shops and on March 17 at Epworth Overspill shops. They
then head to the first border town of Nyamapanda. The route list
