launches safe migration campaign
IOM-Harare has
launched a new website as part of their Information Campaign on
Safe Migration: www.SafeMigrationZimbabwe.com.
The nationwide
Safe Journey Campaign aims to reach all potential migrants,
ideally in their pre-decision stage of migration, to put them in
the picture regarding what documentation is required and to raise
awareness of the necessary considerations in all stages of migration.
The website
will be the backbone of the campaign, containing all the information
used in the campaign plus directives on where to go for more information.
Given the comparatively low levels of access to the internet in
Africa, the site is predominantly aimed at students and young professionals.
IOM-Zimbabwe
launched a massive multi-media campaign, entitled the Safe Journey
campaign, at the end of 2005. The aim is to reach all potential
migrants and inform them of the dangers of irregular migration.
HIV prevention is a very important component of the information.
The Safe
Journey campaign will not only use this website, but television,
film, radio, print, posters, billboards, brochures, a Passport to
Safe Migration, bumper stickers and a musical album by top Zimbabwean
singers and reproduced into cassettes for free distribution predominantly
to truck drivers and residents of border towns.
Already the
CD is receiving daily airplay and the singers have become vocal
advocates of the project. The campaign is regularly covered in local,
regional and international media; bumper stickers have been distributed
in their thousands to truck drivers, the posters are being disseminated
by NGOs and students, and a community campaign/travelling roadshow
is poised to launch next week.
