MDC member attacked by Zanu PF thugs for receiving maize seed
Movement for Democratic Change (MDC-T)
November 11, 2013

In a callous reminiscent to the Zanu-PF’s 2008 violent retribution, Tonderai Nemaungwe, an MDC member from Nyahava in Rusape was last week severely attacked by over 20 armed Zanu-PF youth militia for receiving maize seed distributed under the government loan scheme.

The Zanu-PF goons were led by brothers; Loverage, Forget, Reston Manjingo and one Gude.

According to Nemaungwe whose left arm is now in a plaster, he was on his way to the homestead of Morestaff Saineti, the chairperson for Village 29, to receive his allocation of maize seed when the Zanu-PF hooligans set upon him and attacked him with wooden logs before leaving him for dead.

During the attack, he was asked why he was going to receive the government seed, which according to them was only meant for known Zanu-PF supporters. After the assault, he was dragged and dumped in an isolated bushy area and was only assisted by some good Samaritans who took him to Rusape hospital for treatment.

Nemaungwe’s medical report shows that he received second degree injuries on the head, which had to be stitched and his left hand put in a plaster.

The MDC reiterates its position and condemns the partisan distribution of the government maize seed and grain by Zanu-PF and other government officials.

It is very unfortunate that the move by the insensitive Zanu-PF members is taking place when millions of Zimbabweans face severe food shortages due to the drought, high unemployment and high levels of corruption in Zanu-PF where government agricultural inputs meant to benefit the poor are being looted.
