Manyenyeni elected Harare Mayor
Movement for Democratic Change (MDC-T)
September 16, 2013

Councillor Bernard Gabriel Manyenyeni was today elected as the Mayor of Harare at Town House. Councillor Manyenyeni was elected Harare’s Mayor soon after the swearing-in of councillors at Town House and after garnering 38 votes against Beadle Gwasira of Zanu-PF who polled only seven votes. Councillor Thomas Muzuva was elected deputy mayor after winning by a similar margin.

The mayoral and local council chairperson elections were also held today in Bulawayo, Chitungwiza, Norton, Ruwa, Gweru, Masvingo, Mutare, Kadoma, Redcliff, Victoria Falls, Kariba, Zvishavane, Chegutu, Hwange, Matobo, Binga, Nkayi, Kwekwe and Rusape where the MDC has a majority of councillors were elected into office.

In Bulawayo, Councillor Moyo was elected at the mayor with Councillor Gift Banda coming in as his deputy, while in Chitungwiza; Councillor Phillip Mutoti was elected mayor and Councillor Godwell Mushangwe the deputy mayor.

In Ruwa, Councillor Robson Mushayavanhu was elected chairperson and Councillor Manyepudzo Mbira was elected deputy chairperson.

In Chegutu, Councillor Leo Gwanzura was elected the mayor and Edias Ticharwa the deputy mayor. The election of mayors went on smoothly and has demonstrated a lot of political maturity within the MDC.

The party therefore strongly support those that have been elected into office. The choice of candidates has clearly shown that MDC is never short of talent.

The MDC therefore takes this opportunity to congratulate all those that have been elected Mayors on MDC ticket and we urge the people in respective cities to fully support these candidates in their discharge of duties.
