High Court Judge Francis Bere yesterday ruled that the MDC’s challenge on the government’s position that mayors should only be selected from elected councillors is not urgent.

MDC lawyers Mwonzora and Associates had filed an urgent High Court application, seeking an order to compel Local Government minister Ignatious Chombo to allow non-councillors to be elected as mayors and chairpersons of local authorities.

In the application, the party cited Chombo and provincial administrators for Harare and Bulawayo as respondents.

“The judge has refused to hear the case on the basis that the matter is not urgent,” MDC spokesperson Douglas Mwonzora told the Daily News yesterday.

He said Bere did not hear the matter on merits.

The party’s lawyer also confirmed that Bere had ruled that the matter was not urgent.
