MDC commemorates Workers’ Day
Movement
for Democratic Change
April
30, 2013
The MDC joins
the people of Zimbabwe in commemorating the International Workers’
Day, which this year comes against a background of hope in that
the next MDC government will create more jobs for the people.
This year’s
theme for the commemorations is; “Workers under Siege, Organise,
Unite and Fight On”.
It is with hope
that this year’s commemorations come at a time when the country
is preparing for the watershed elections which the MDC is set to
win resoundingly and give the people confidence that the MDC through
the astute leadership of President Tsvangirai will create employment
through infrastructure development and direct local and foreign
investment.
The celebrations
also come at a time when the people of Zimbabwe are moving towards
the completion of the new Constitution of Zimbabwe. It is encouraging
to note that the new Charter fully guarantees the workers’
rights to hold demonstrations and has a comprehensive Bill of Rights
which ensures a complete realisation of individual liberties.
As we mark this year’s celebrations, we note that the plight
of the workers across the country has to be resolved as a matter
of urgency. As a social democratic party, the MDC recognizes and
demands that workers should be paid a living wage.
The MDC notes
that it is with great concern that as we celebrate International
Workers’ Day, Zanu PF wants to takeover and shutdown the remaining
factories under the guise of empowerment and indigenisation.
The chaotic
Zanu PF empowerment drive will not benefit anyone but only a few
politically connected in Zanu PF.
The MDC believes
that we need to revive our industries so that the silent machines
can roar once again in our factories and the hundreds of thousands
of professional workers who have either fled the country or were
retrenched can return with pride to serve the country of their birth.
The MDC firmly
supports the workers’ struggle for real change and a new Zimbabwe
and in respect of our tradition, the MDC leadership including the
Minister of Labour and Social Welfare, Hon. Paurina Mpariwa will
on Wednesday join the thousands of other workers in celebrating
this important day at Gwanzura Stadium in Highfield, Harare.
Our participation
in this year’s commemoration is informed by our strong commitment
to Zimbabwe’s reconstruction leading to a genuine transformation
of the lives of the people of Zimbabwe. The MDC will continue to
walk and fight for real change with jobs and a better life for all
side by side with the people of Zimbabwe.
