The defence
counsel in the High Court trial of 29 MDC activists who are facing
false charges of murdering a police officer last year have blasted
the State prosecutor for not taking seriously the court case.
The insincerity
of State prosecutor, Edmore Nyazamba was raised today by the Beatrice
Mtetwa, the lead defence counsel after Nyazamba had blocked granting
of bail to some of the MDC members who are in remand prison.
On Tuesday,
Nyazamba had promised that he wanted time to today to analyse MDC
members who could be granted bail after it was revealed in court
that the evidence provided by the State witness, Chief Inspector
Clever Ntini was inconsistent.
However, Nyazamba
today made a U-turn and told Justice Chinembiri Bhunu, the trial
judge that the accused should re-apply for fresh bail. Mtetwa accused
Nyazamba of unnecessarily raising the people's hopes and expectations
and later making an about turn at the last minute.
"The State
does not take seriously the issue of bail and he is just playing
time for the past two and half days," Mtetwa said.
The trial was
then postponed to Monday.
Meanwhile, the
bail application of the 26 MDC members who are in remand prison
will be heard at the Supreme Court on Monday at 3PM. The other three;
Solomon Madzore, the MDC Youth Assembly chairperson, Lovemore Taruvinga
Magaya and Cynthia Manjoro have since been granted bail.
