MDC leadership meets Mash West councillors
Movement for Democratic Change
October 19, 2012

The MDC National Executive members today met with councillors from Mashonaland West province in Harare to strengthen relations between the MDC run councils and the party and to ensure that there is transparency and accountability in all local authorities.

Leading the MDC National Executive was the Deputy National Chairperson, Hon. Morgen Komichi who was accompanied by the Secretary for Local Government, Hon. Sesel Zvidzai and the secretary for International Relations, Hon. Jameson Timba.

The MDC is in charge of all four urban councils in Mashonaland West province. The towns are; Chinhoyi, Chegutu, Kariba and Karoi.

After today's fruitful meeting, the councillors came up with a number of resolutions and best practices to improve service delivery.

The councillors said despite scarce resources due to failure by some residents and businesses in paying their rates and rentals, they were striving to improve on service delivery to residents especially on provision of clean water, sewer reticulation, garbage collection and health delivery at council clinics.

The councillors said the major challenge they were facing was the interference of their day to day operations by Zanu PF functionaries and the Minister of Local Government, Rural and Urban Development, Ignatius Chombo.

Senator Zvidzai, the MDC Local Government Secretary who also deputises Chombo in the ministry said the meeting was a success as they had managed to review achievements done by the councillors since getting into office in 2008.

In Kariba, the council had managed to provide 95 percent of the residents with clean water. The water reticulation exercise was made possible with funding from GIZ, a German Technical Cooperation.

In Chegutu, the councillors did wonders in providing clean water, street lighting and road maintenance. The council also acquired road maintenance equipment, two ambulances and a fire-fighter truck while they had enough drug stocks at all clinics.

Similar meetings will be held with councillors in other provinces.
