  • MDC calls on SADC, AU to supervise stakeholders' conference
    Movement for Democratic Change (MDC)
    September 14, 2012

At the very long last the faction ridden Zanu PF Politburo has resolved to follow the provisions of the Global Political Agreement and agreed to let the COPAC draft to be taken to the Second All Stakeholders Conference.

It is disheartening that Zanu PF has delayed this important process due to the dysfunctional factionalism in that party. Had this process not been unreasonably delayed, the Second All Stakeholders Conference would have been held before the end of August 2012.

We hope that Zanu PF is genuine this time and that it is not just trying to fool SADC that the process is mow on course so as to preempt a possible SADC summit on Zimbabwe meant to discuss the constitutional impasse. We hope this time around Zanu PF are not playing the usual political games with the people of Zimbabwe.

We know that there is a faction in Zanu PF, that wants to cause chaos and mayhem at the Conference so as to collapse the process. We also know that the police led by Chihuri would be too glad to watch idly while the Zanu PF thugs harass the delegates to the conference. The specter political violence and mayhem that was unleashed by the Zanu PF militia in 2009 , upon the First All Stakeholders Conference is clearly still with us.

The MDC therefore insists on the executive to ensure that satisfactory mechanisms are put in place to stop the criminal elements from disturbing the conference. Further, the MDC insists that SADC and the African Union (AU) and the international must community supervise and monitor the Second All Stakeholders' Conference. SADC must be assured by the executive that all the necessary security arrangements have been put in place before the Second All Stakeholders Conference.

We remain fortified on our position that the people of Zimbabwe are the ultimate judges of whether this constitution is good for them and not for a single political party to purport to decide for them.

Zimbabweans have made their own Constitution and are determined through the referendum to carve out this new contract which will determines how, why and by whom they want to be governed. Zanu PF cannot be allowed to hold this nation to ransom anymore. The people of Zimbabwe need to be protected from the sunset party so as to secure their democratic, peaceful future.
