Government must raise money for civil servants salaries
Movement
for Democratic Change (MDC)
September
10, 2012
The MDC urges the inclusive
government to urgently look into the conditions of service of
the civil servants and remunerate them in line with the country's
cost of living standards.
As a labour-backed party,
the MDC is concerned that the conditions of service for the public
employees remain unacceptable as they are paid below the poverty
datum line and therefore implore the government to improve their
salaries and conditions of service.
The MDC's philosophy
for a living wage is anchored on its background that has a strong
bias towards the poor and the working class. The party was formed
on two pillars: the trade union movement and the constitutional
movement.
The party demands and
insists that the Inclusive government pay civil servants their bonuses
this year and any excuses for non-payment are unacceptable.
The MDC remains concerned
and condemns the refusal by some diamond mining companies to remit
revenue to Treasury, which revenue is crucial should the salaries
of the civil servants be increased.
The party is convinced
that it is possible to meet the civil servants' call for better
salaries and bonuses if there is clear remittance of diamond revenues
to Treasury; the removal of thousands of ghost workers from the
State's payroll; earnings from millions of dollars in police
coffers earned through fines; a drastic cut-back of the run-away
government foreign travel expenses; and revenue from all mining
concessions which are yet to be deposited into the Treasury account.
The MDC applauds efforts
being made by Hon. Tendai Biti, the Minister of Finance in trying
to source money from outside Zimbabwe to alleviate the plight of
civil servants. His efforts would have been unnecessary if the revenue
from the diamonds were being properly managed.
The State employees are
the major victims of Zanu PF's political insincerity.
It is disturbing
Zanu PF continues to dabble in selfish politics by blocking Minister
Biti's proposals to raise money from the diamonds
proceeds in order to make a respectable salary package for the
civil servants a living reality.
The MDC calls
for an immediate action aimed at improving the lives of the people
of Zimbabwe, particularly the civil servants.
