MDC welcomes Supreme Court ruling on governors
Movement
for Democratic Change (MDC)
July
25, 2012
The MDC welcomes the Supreme Court decision in which it barred Robert
Mugabe from appealing against a ruling at the High Court allowing
Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai to sue him over the unilateral
appointments of provincial governors without consulting him.
The Supreme
Court ruling is a progressive development in which Mugabe is being
sued over non-performance of his duties as clearly stated in the
Constitution
of the country, especially in Amendment
19.
Mugabe clearly
violated the Global
Political Agreement (GPA) in which he is a signatory, which
obliges him to consult the Prime Minister in all key government
appointments.
As the MDC,
we hope that the matter over the illegal appointments of 10 provincial
governors will now be heard expeditiously at the High Court.
Mugabe must
answer on why he broke the country's laws and appointed governors
without consulting Prime Minister Tsvangirai.
The MDC is happy
that Mugabe is being made to uphold the country's law as two
weeks ago he lost another case at the Supreme Court in which he
was ordered to hold by-elections in three Matabeleland provinces.
As a Party,
the MDC believes in the rule of law and we expect Mugabe to comply
with these two Supreme Court rulings.
