Government should protect citizens from abuse
Movement
for Democratic Change (MDC)
April
26, 2012
The MDC is worried
over increasing reports of rampant abuse of Zimbabwean workers especially
by Chinese employers.
We are concerned that
yesterday, more than 30 construction workers at the National Defence
College along Mazowe road were barred from protesting by armed soldiers
over the illegal termination of their contracts and non-payment
of their wages.
The employees complained
of being subjected to work extremely long hours and that their employment
contracts had been terminated this week without notice.
It is disturbing to note
that the ill-treatment of Zimbabweans by foreigners has been going
on for some time and is on the rise. We call for an end to this.
The reason why people
of Zimbabwe went to war against the colonialists was in order to
liberate ourselves and be treated with respect and dignity.
As the MDC,
we urge the inclusive
government to stop this injustice.
The action by some of
these foreign investors is not expected and should never be tolerated
in a civilised society like Zimbabwe. Zimbabweans are known for
their hard work and should be rewarded accordingly.
What is even more disturbing
is the use of armed soldiers to thwart the unarmed demonstrators
from carrying out their democratic right to have their grievances
addressed.
We know soldiers are
there to defend us but when they turn against us a question is asked
on who will defend the defenceless.
Zimbabwe deserves an
army that is professional and that is there for the people. This
has been lacking in the country as soldiers have turned against
their own citizens.
In 2008, thousands
of MDC supporters were killed,
injured and assaulted by soldiers with the help of other security
forces and Zanu PF militia.
The MDC, therefore, would
like to see the realignment of the entire security sector before
the next elections so that Zimbabweans will be able to exercise
their right to vote in a free environment.
