MP Karenyi to remain in prison after state quashes granting of bail
Movement
for Democratic Change (MDC)
December
20, 2011
Hon. Lynnette Karenyi, the MDC Women's Assembly organising
secretary and the MP for Chimanimani West was today remanded in
prison in Mutare after the State invoked the notorious Section 121
of the Criminal
Procedure and Evidence Act to bar her bail.
Hon. Karenyi
who is facing false charges of undermining the authority of the
President had been granted a US$200 bail at the Mutare Magistrates'
Courts by Magistrate Noah Gwatidzo.
However, the
State led by Trueman Joma immediately invoked the draconian Section
121 of the Criminal Procedure and Evidence Act that invalidates
a bail ruling and keeps the accused in custody for a further seven
days. She was remanded to 28 December.
She was arrested
yesterday and remanded in custody to today on allegations that she
had undermined the authority of the President while addressing an
MDC rally at Nhedziwa Business Centre in Chimanimani on 09 December
2011.
The decision
by the State to invoke the infamous Section 121 shows that the Attorney-General's
Office continued to be used by Zanu PF for persecuting and not prosecuting
MDC officials and supporters.
It vindicates
the MDC's position that cases against MDC members are 100
percent politics and zero percent law.
Hon. Karenyi's
case is just but one of the several instances where the national
institutions such as the Attorney-General's Office have been
abused by the sunset party - Zanu PF to achieve its political ends.
