Our environment: Our future - MDC
Movement for Democratic Change (MDC)
December 05, 2011

The MDC joins all environmentally aware people and activists, and indeed all Zimbabweans in the Tree Planting Campaign.

It is reported that Zimbabwe is fast becoming desertified due to extensive deforestation - illegally for wood sales given the power shortages in the country but mostly by tobacco farmers for curing their tobacco. It is reported that approximately 330,000 hectares of forest is being denuded each year in Zimbabwe.

While Zimbabwe has an excellent Environmental Policy and Strategy document and all the laws in place to protect our wildlife heritage and environment, little or no implementation of the same has taken place.

As MDC, we encourage the wise and prudent use of environmental resources, as well as conservation and prevention of irreversible damage to resources through planning, technological and economic measures.

The MDC believes that the Inclusive government should come up with measures that promote sound environmental standards that contribute positively to economic and social development and therefore a better quality of life for every individual.

All Zimbabweans should plant a tree to show they care for a new Zimbabwe. 13 million trees planted this December represent a greener and safer Zimbabwe for our use today and protection for the future generation.
