MDC calls for a non-partisan police force

Hon Elton Mangoma, the MDC deputy Treasurer General, has called upon the police to effectively and professional execute their duties.

He said this while addressing a rally on Sunday at Tanda Rest Camp, ward 36 in Makoni North.

Hon Mangoma, who is also the Minister of Energy and Power Development said it is notable that all political parties have joined hands in denouncing violence and so the police are left with nothing but to professional execute their duties without bias or favouritism. On that same note he said the C.I.O's should be regulated by the government and people should provide names of C.I.O's who are causing havoc in the communities.

He also made it clear that the MDC does not have problems with war veterans but want the people of Zimbabwe to have their freedoms without being intimidated, harassed or provoked by the war veterans.

Hon. Mangoma explained that the constitution making process is now at the drafting stage.

He said if everything goes according to plan, there will be the second stakeholders meeting early next year paving way for a referendum and ultimately free and fair elections.

He said in preparatory to a free and fair election, the voters roll should be sterilised of ghost voters to ensure only eligible registered people vote. ZEC, he said, should also have new staff recruitment.

At a separate rally on Saturday at Derembwe Business Centre in ward 36, Mutare South, Senator Keresensia Chabuka encouraged the people to remain focused, firm, resolute and strong to finish the battle of democracy. She said people should not be tossed around.

"It is not always rosy but we should soldier on and defend that which is right. A new Zimbabwe is inevitable and so do not be left behind," she said.

The Provincial Youth Chairman Dennis Simango reminded the people that one of MDC's goals is to free the people of Zimbabwe.

"Zimbabwe as a nation is free; we got our political independence in 1980, but the people are not yet fee. We should be free to do what we want, to associate with who we want, to say what we want, and to wear what we want," he said.

He also encouraged people to register to vote saying wishing Zanu PF will go away, making slogans and attending party activities without going to register to vote means nothing and will bring no change.

"Our greatest weapon is prayer and pen. We should go and register to vote," he said.

In Midlands South province, a rally was held in Zvishavane-Ngezi on Sunday at Mandava Stadium where thousands turned up.

Hon Lovemore Moyo, the MDC National Chairperson addressed the rally where he said the MDC sympathised with workers who had to bear the brunt of investment flaws in the country.

He told the crowd that MDC, as a labour-backed party, sympathizes with the workers of the Shabani Mashaba Mines - which has been caught up in legal battles over ownership of the mine. The party wants sanity and normalcy at the troubled mining giant.

Hon. Moyo said the Parliament is already trying hard to make sure that serious production starts and that the workers receive unpaid salaries and bonuses.

SMMHZ was seized from businessman Mutumwa Mawere via the Reconstruction of State Indebted and Insolvent Companies Act (Reconstruction Laws and Regulations) which deemed his companies indebted to the state by owing parastatals. SMMH was deemed to be indebted to the State by virtue of owing money to the central bank (Z$30 billion), a Z$252 million debt to the National Social Security Authority, Minerals Marketing Corporation of Zimbabwe (Z$396 million), Zimbank (Z$20 billion), Zesa (Z$8,2 billion) and owing the tax collector, Zimbabwe Revenue Authority of Z$49 billion.

In a letter dated November 9 2011, Mawere's lawyers, Kyle Attorneys, wants Mpofu to disclose the identity of the said institution "who you allege has taken up ownership of, or became the registered shareholder of SMMHZ and advise on what basis of law or circumstance, the said institution became the lawful owner of or registered shareholder of SMMHZ".

In Mhangura, Clifford Hlatywayo, the MDC Youth Assembly spokesperson addressed party supporters and urged them to continue pushing for a non-violent transition to oust Mugabe and Zanu PF.

Hlatywayo said the MDC was ready for a a non violent, free and fair election at any given date so that a legitimate government is put in place.

"Zanu PF knows it has no support, that is why it unleashes violence on the people, but as MDC we can still get the nation out of this present evil into a blessed, prosperous and democratic future. We are the agents of real change," he said.
