  • Madzore's bail judgment now set for Thursday
    MDC Youth Assembly
    October 18, 2011

The bail judgment for Solomon Madzore, the MDC Youth Assembly president and Lovemore Taruvinga Magaya, a youth activist will finally be heard at the High Court on Thursday the 20th of October 2011.

The two are part of 28 MDC members who are facing trumped-up charges of murdering a police officer in May in Glen View at a popular beer outlet.

The State is opposing bail claiming that the two are a flight risk but the defence lawyer says the two are suitable bail candidates. The defence lawyer, Gift Mtisi said the arrest of Madzore two weeks ago was nothing but a ploy by the State to arrest all leaders of the MDC Youth Assembly.

Mtisi dismissed claims by the State that Madzore was a flight risk as since the death of the policeman he had travelled outside the country on duty and returned to Zimbabwe. Madzore was arrested at his Waterfalls home while Magaya was arrested at his workplace.

The High Court bail application by Madzore and Magaya was first made last Wednesday and was postponed to Friday. On Friday it was postponed again to Monday after the State prosecutor said he was not ready with his submissions. On Monday Justice Hlekani Mwayera postponed the ruling to today and said she would make her judgment on Thursday.

Of the 28 arrested members, nine including Madzore and Magaya are in remand prison while the rest have been granted bail at the High Court.

Unknown revellers at a nightclub at Glen View 3 Shopping Centre murdered the police officer in May. The continued incarceration of MDC Youth Assembly leaders and activists is a clear testimony that ZANU PF is using state institutions to try and disable The Assembly.

The MDC Youth Assembly reiterates that we are not intimidated, we are seriously committed to deliver the real change that Zimbabweans are yearning for.

Tomorrow, 19 October, youth president Solomon Madzore together with other 26 activists will appear in court at Rotten Row for their routine remand.
