2 Harare councillors acquitted
Movement
for Democratic Change (MDC)
October 17, 2011
Two Harare Town councillors, Warship Dumba of Ward 17 Mt Pleasant
and Casper Takura of 20 Tafara were today acquitted at the Harare
Magistrates' Courts. They were facing false charges of defrauding
Harare Town council.
The two councillors
were arrested this month and their trial was supposed to kick off
today but the Magistrate threw out the case saying the two had no
case to answer.
They were arrested
on the instructions of the Minister of Local Government, Ignatius
Chombo. Before their arrests, the two councillors had laid charges
at the Harare Central Police Station of illegal acquisition of council
land by Chombo and Zanu PF's Phillip Chiyangwa.
Meanwhile, four
Harare City councillors, Paul Gorekore of 3 Mbare, Johnson Zaranyika,
Ward 39, Dzivaresekwa, Maxwell Katsande, Ward 26, Highfield and
Silas Machetu, Ward 25, Highfield will on Thursday challenge their
dismissal as councillors at the High Court.
The four were
fired by Chombo last year on trumped up charges of abusing public
office.
