We salute you, great fighter- Retired Army General Solomon 'Rex Nhongo' Mujuru
MDC Youth Assembly
August 18, 2011

The MDC Youth Assembly leadership and the entire membership joins the Vice President Amai Joice Teurai Ropa Mujuru, the Mujuru family, the people of Chikomba and the rest of the nation in mourning the death of a gallant fighter Solomon 'Rex Nhongo' Mujuru. Mujuru who died at the age of 62 left an indelible mark in the politics of Zimbabwe as his contribution during and after the liberation struggle was enormous. We are saddened by his suspicious death and we call for a thorough professional investigation into the cause of his demise.

As the MDCYA we are at pains to express how devastated we are at the loss of a true Cde Rex Nhongo. The generality of youths in Zimbabwe saw Mujuru as one of those genuine fighters, soldiers of independence and freedom as he selflessly fought battles with the colonial regime. Some of great fighters include such names as General Tongo, Lookout Masuku, Ndabaningi Sithole, Edger Tekere, Hebert Chitepo, cde Chikerema, Joshua Nkomo, Dumiso Dabengwa, Cde Ziyapapa Moyo, Victoria Chitepo among other thousands of the sons and daughters of the soil.

Rex Nhongo was an epitome of bravery and courage coupled with commitment and as young people we aim to follow in his footsteps as we wage war against culture of corruption, violence and intimidation currently bedeviling Zimbabwe's political landscape. His political participation showed high level of civilization as he never wasted time in petty party politics. He was a professional army commander so different from other generals who are even threatening to disregard people's choice.

The death of Rex Nhongo is not only shocking but devastating noting that he was one of the few sober politicians in Zimbabwe. He showed resilience in the face of difficult economic situations soldiering on with his business activities which is a cornerstone of our Zimbabwe economy.

Mujuru was an icon of unity and unionism as he stood between the Zipra and Zanla forces during and after the liberation struggle, a character that was fundamental to the attainment of independence in Zimbabwe. Such a show of selflessness is what guides the Youth Assembly in executing its mandate of delivering freedom and real change to the millions of young people spread across the breadth and depth of Zimbabwe.

Mujuru was a soldier and fighter par-excellence, a beacon of courage and hope for young generation, a soft speaking and successful businessman.

Mujuru was an epitome of clean and smart politics which many in Zanu PF are failing to emulate. His role during and after the liberation struggle speak volumes of his devotion to total independence. As young people we are grateful to his role as we are endeavoring for a New Zimbabwe full of jobs, food, peace and unity.

We call upon ZRP and all security institutions to institute a professional and transparent investigation into the cause of Mujuru's death as we believe a general cannot die just in such confusing and suspicious circumstances when in actual sense he survived many battles during the liberation struggle.

We salute Rex Nhongo the soldier and liberator; we salute Solomon Mujuru the General. We pay tribute to his undying quest for independence and total freedom.

Rest in peace Solomon Mujuru.
