The MDC Youth Assembly leadership not in hiding
Youth Assembly, MDC
June 28, 2011

The MDC Youth Assembly wishes to respond to misleading rumours and allegations to the effect that the national youth leadership is on the run or as they say, in hiding attending military training in South Africa. The disturbing news are aimed at shifting the attention of the leadership from working towards bringing change and democracy in Zimbabwe. The leadership will not be swayed into forfeiting the mandate bestowed on it by millions of youths whose future is dependent on their leadership to campaign for a free and prosperous Zimbabwe.

Such shameless and baseless malice are coming from the forces of darkness with the aim of portraying the youth leadership as incapable despite its full support from the millions of youths in Zimbabwe. We will not hesitate to point fingers at Zanu PF for creating those lies. We are fully aware of their scheme of transferring chaos and disorder from their party to the people's movement.

The MDC Youth leadership has never bothered to listen to these old Zanu PF tactics as it is going ahead with its day to day duties. The youth leadership is found at its Harvest house offices or in communities with the people because the party is a movement of the people.

MDC Youth Assembly leadership is not and has never been composed of criminals. Criminals are found in Zanu PF. If Chihuri and his police officers are seriously looking for criminals they should first go and arrest all Zanu PF members as they all have cases to answer before the law including Joseph Mwale. All Zanu PF members committed various offences ranging from corruption, violence, murder, intimidation, theft to name just a few.

The youth leadership has a vision for Zimbabwe and that vision will not be realised by hiding from the partisan police officers who reacts to the whims of their Zanu PF masters. We know the police's tendency of protecting Zanu PF criminals whilst arresting MDC victims. Numerous cases of political violence against MDC supporters have been reported without action from the police forces. Over the weekend there was violence in Mbare when the unabated Chipangano assaulted people at a residents meeting and to date no one has been arrested.

The youth leadership is conscious of the expectations of the millions of Zimbabwean youths. The focus of the youth leadership is clearly defined 'to drive the movement and win elections.' Hiding will not add value in our quest to remove Mugabe and his Zanu PF party from the government.

Hiding will not bring the much needed change in Zimbabwe. Hiding will not pull Zimbabwe out of the current political quagmire threatening human livelihood. Hiding will not help the party achieve its long held vision of a peaceful and democratic Zimbabwe. Hiding will not ensure peaceful, free and fair elections in Zimbabwe. Hiding will only serve to derail all the gains the movement recorded since the formation of the party in 1999. Hiding will only serve to weaken the movement and give Zanu PF an unwarranted upper hand in this shacky coalition.

The youth leadership is still going ahead with its constitutional mandate and just over the weekend they addressed a rally in Gutu central at Dewure. At the rally Youth Assembly President Solomon Madzore pointed out that Zimbabweans do not need military training, guns or force to remove Mugabe from power. The power to remove Mugabe lies in the people's ability to mobilise and vote against his tyrannical and dictatorial rule. Madzore further lambasted Douglas Nyikayaramba and police chief Augustine Chihuri and urged them to immediately resign to pave way for non partisan forces to take charge of the security forces.

At the same meeting Youth Assembly Spokesperson Clifford Hlatywayo reiterated the youth assembly's theme of building a youth with a difference. The new generation, the youth assembly is advocating for should be able to shun violence, protect communities from any form of political abuse and participate in political processes through voting in national elections. The new breed of youth should have respect for Zimbabwe's culture and traditions, build peace and democracy. Hlatywayo further noted that the MDC has been winning unfree and unfair elections since 2000 and the main worry lies on the transfer of power.
