Minister Timba arrested
Movement for Democratic Change (MDC)
June 24, 2011
The MDC wishes to advise that it's Secretary for International
Relations and Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office,
Hon Timba was today arrested by police on allegations of undermining
the authority of the President.
According to
the police, the charge against Hon. Timba is based on an article
which appeared in last week's edition of The Standard newspaper
which allegedly stated that Robert Mugabe lied about the outcome
of the SADC summit in South
Africa.
Currently, Hon.
Timba is being held by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID)
Law and Order Section at Harare Central police station. The MDC
finds it strange that the Minister can be arrested on the basis
of a newspaper report. Equally, we find it a little suspicious to
choose Friday as the day to effect arrest.
The MDC is watching
the developments closely and demands that the Minister is treated
with the respect he deserves in accordance with the laws of the
country.

Information
reaching the MDC says Hon. Timba is being tortured at an unknown
location after he was kidnapped by the police yesterday.
Update
June 25, 2011 - 2:08pm
The MDC advises the people of Zimbabwe that since yesterday afternoon,
the police have not allowed Hon. Jameson Timba, our Secretary for
International Relations, access to lawyers although the police had
earlier indicated that he was detained at Harare Central Police Station.
Hon. Timba is also the Minister
of State in the Prime Minister's Office and MP for Mt Pleasant.
When our lawyers visited the said police station, the police said
the Minister was not there. Hon. Timba's family, relatives,
friends and the MDC have not been able to supply him with food.
The MDC
has it on good authority that Hon. Timba is being tortured at a
secret location. The party calls upon the police to disclose the
whereabouts of the minister. We call upon SADC and the international
community to intervene and stop the gross human rights violations
against Minister Timba.
The MDC and
the Timba family fear for the minister's life and safety.
