More MDC members arrested in Glen View
Movement for Democratic Change
May 31, 2011
MDC councillor,
Tungamirai Madzokere of Ward 32, Glen View, Harare was today arrested
in Glen View, in the latest crackdown on MDC activists who are being
arrested on allegations
of killing a police inspector who was murdered by unknown revellers
at a liquor store in the suburb on Sunday.
Another MDC activist, Cynthia Manjoro and her brother
were arrested at their Glen View home yesterday evening. The MDC
could not ascertain the name of Cynthia's brother. We understand
that scores of MDC youths have been picked up by State security
agents in Harare today but their whereabouts are still unknown.
About 14 of
the MDC activists, arrested yesterday are being held at the CID
Law and Order department, Harare Central Police Station. However,
our lawyers are being denied
access to these activists as the police officers are claiming
that they are still "vetting" the accused or have "urgent
meetings" to attend to. We are therefore unable to ascertain
the physical condition of these people and the MDC is seriously
concerned about the fate of those caught in the latest police dragnet.
Some of those
in police custody include; Last Maengahama, an MDC national executive
member and his three brothers, Stanley, Edison, Lazarus Maengahama;
Odius, Lloyd, Precious Chitanda - all related to Glen View North
chairperson of the party, Mrs Chitanda, Stefan Takaedzwa, Mavis
Madzokere, the wife of Councillor Madzokere and her sister-in-law,
Ollyn Madzokere.
The arrest of
MDC members is a clear attempt by the police and Zanu PF try to
portray the MDC as a violent party, which it clearly is not. The
MDC is calling for professional, non-partisan and impartial investigations
in this matter. Only through this can the real offenders be brought
to justice.
