Movement for Democratic Change
April 19, 2011
Hundreds of
villagers, MDC members and officials today attended the burial of
Rwisai Nyakauru, the kraal head for Nyakauru Village, who died
on Saturday after battling with ill health following his assault
by a Zanu PF mob in February. Nyakauru, 82, was assaulted by Zanu
PF hooligans on 13 February at Taziwa Shopping Centre in Nyanga
before handing him over to the police at Nyamaropa Police Station.
He was charged with public violence and was detained
together with Nyanga North MP, Hon. Douglas Mwonzora for three weeks
at the Mutare Remand Prison.
In Matabeleland North province, the provincial chairperson,
Sengezo Tshabangu and the vice chairperson Abednico Bhebhe were
picked by police from Hwange early this morning. At the time of
releasing this statement the two were still detained at Hwange Police
Station with no charge being levelled against them.
Meanwhile, Shadreck Malunga, an MDC supporter was
assaulted by a group of soldiers at Chipadze Shopping Centre in
Bindura in Mashonaland Central. Malunga, whose wife is the MDC Bindura
North District Women's Assembly Organising Secretary, said
he was assaulted after refusing to contribute towards the independence
celebrations for the province on Saturday evening.
Malunga was rushed to hospital after sustaining
deep cuts on the mouth, knees and ribs. His wife who was in Harare
attending the provincial congress on that day said she was shocked
to hear that her husband was taken to hospital after falling victim
to the suspected soldiers. The group of soldiers who had come to
prepare for the provincial Independence Day celebrations were going
door to door forcing residents to pay US$5 in preparation of the
Independence Day.
In Masvingo,
the embattled self styled war veterans' leader Jabulani Sibanda
is back in the province and is intimidating and threatening villagers
with death if they refuse to cooperate with Zanu PF. The terrorist
held a meeting on Friday at Chamakondo Business Centre in Masvingo
Central with chiefs and village heads urging them to make sure that
their subordinates do not repeat what they did in March
2008 if they want their lives.
Sibanda has been causing upheaval in the province
since last year, threatening people with violence and evictions
if they support and vote for the People's Party of Excellence
- the MDC. Sibanda told village heads that it was their duty to
make sure that the people support and voted for Zanu PF.
